Young Paik is an accomplished trial lawyer who focuses primarily on defending clients in white-collar criminal matters and government investigations on both the federal and state level. In addition, he focuses on high-stakes civil litigation and internal investigations. Prior to co-founding Paik Deal, Young served as a federal prosecutor for nearly eight years, before which he was a defense attorney at a major law firm in Boston. Young has over 19 years of experience seeking justice and solving problems for his clients.
Young’s recent clients include both individuals and companies across a wide range of industries. In criminal matters, he has successfully defended his clients by convincing the government not to bring charges or obtaining other favorable outcomes, including the dismissal of all charges in some cases. In civil matters, he has successfully represented his clients in various business disputes and other litigation, such as a multi-million-dollar contract dispute and a significant defense-costs dispute in connection with a subrogation suit. In addition, global companies have relied on Young to conduct internal investigations to identify and address employee misconduct and other company problems.
From 2011 through 2018, Young served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. As a member of the USAO’s Healthcare Fraud Unit, he investigated and prosecuted companies and individuals for a wide range of criminal activity in the medical and pharmaceutical industries, including healthcare fraud, wire fraud, Anti-Kickback Statute violations, False Claims Act violations, HIPAA violations, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. Young also served in the USAO’s Narcotics & Money Laundering Unit, where he investigated and prosecuted global drug-trafficking organizations. He was lead or co-lead trial counsel in multiple trials, all of which ended in conviction, and he successfully argued before the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
Young is active in the community. He recently served as Co-Chair of the Boston Bar Association White-Collar Crime Steering Committee, he’s a member of the Asian American Lawyers Association of Massachusetts, and he devotes significant time to representing indigent defendants in criminal matters. Additionally, Young serves as a board member of a non-profit organization that supports neurodiverse people. While he was a federal prosecutor, Young was a panel member of the High-Risk Reentry Initiative, where he met with inmates to help them prepare for reintegrating into the community and avoid reoffending. Young also has a long history of mentoring youth, including kids in the Citizen Schools/Discovering Justice Legal Apprenticeship Program and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston.
Young earned his JD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 2004. At UNC Law, he was a member of the National Moot Court Team and The North Carolina Journal of International Law and Commercial Regulation. In 1999, Young earned his BA from Tufts University, where he graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
Young is admitted to practice law in Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
